You’re Tired... But Your Nervous System Won’t Let You Rest

Somewhere along the way, we started wearing stress like a badge. “How are you?” became “So busy!” — said with a strange mix of exhaustion and pride. We equated being stretched thin with being valuable, and rest with laziness. But here’s the truth that nobody talks about at the office: chronic stress is not a sign of success. It’s a sign that something is deeply out of balance.

When I was living in that cycle — over-caffeinated, under-rested, constantly on — I genuinely believed slowing down would mean falling behind. The idea of taking 20 minutes twice a day to sit quietly felt irresponsible. And yet it was the single most productive decision I’ve ever made. Not productive in the “grind harder” sense, but in the “I can actually think clearly and make better decisions” sense.

The research backs this up. Chronic stress shrinks the prefrontal cortex — the part of your brain responsible for decision-making, emotional regulation, and creative thinking. Meanwhile, it enlarges the amygdala, making you more reactive, more anxious, and less capable of perspective. You’re literally getting worse at the things you’re working so hard to be good at.

Rest isn’t the opposite of ambition. It’s the foundation of it. When you give your mind and body the deep rest they need, you don’t lose your edge — you sharpen it. You respond instead of react. You see solutions instead of problems. You show up as the version of yourself that stress has been hiding.
